Throughout our day I hung out with the kids and got to know them (and get my behind kicked at some pool). Just hanging out with the kids without the pressure to be their teacher helped me to overcome some of my misconceptions. Additionally, this week we read The Red Shoe and Why is That Child so Rude? These two article helped to enlighten me about my own preconceptions and how my own experiences play into my funds of knowledge. I saw on Tuesday as I was playing pool with two students how my funds of knowledge and my students funds of knowledge can conflict.
D: Hey Meaghen! Come play Freeball (pool without the cue ball) with us!
Me: How do you play?
(D&J explain the game)
Me: Sure. (I start to play with them and they realize that I'm actually good at pool which translates into me being good at Freeball.)
J: Yo man! You hustlin' us!
Me: How can I be hustlin' you if there's no money on it?
In this scenario, if I have had my teacher guard up and had been thinking using my funds of knowledge, I probably would have gotten offended and been stern with them but day by day I am working on making adjustments in my funds on knowledge to be better for my students.
