So What: There was a completely different way that I could have taught this lesson. I could have got up and lectured my students on the electoral college or given them a worksheet or just read from a textbook. Pulling quality children's literature and making that interdisciplinary connection between language arts and social studies really had my kids connecting with the material. Days after we had gone over the material the students were able to recall the key information necessary to continue our discussion on the election.
Now What: Going forward, I will continue to work to search for ways to bring in quality children's literature. Working with my students to see themselves or the content we are discussing is really important to facilitating a holistic education that is interconnected rather than disconnected or segmented into different and separate subjects.
