Towards the end of the lesson, I tried to implement what I thought was an effective differentiation strategy (having students who finish quickly assist students who are struggling) and it fell through. I tried to make adjustments and provide support to the students who were struggling and challenge the students who were finished early, but it was too late. After post conferencing with my university supervisor I found out that that is not an effective differentiation strategy. If I were to redo this lesson, I would plan a different strategy for enrichment and intervention. (The changes are reflected in the lesson plan.) Overall, my students enjoy using the Myon program. At their reading ability levels it is not uncommon for them to be able to either read the words in a text or comprehend the meaning of the text. Using read aloud programs, like Myon, takes some of the pressure off of fluency and pushes them to work on reading comprehension. If I were to redo this lesson, I would have taught on a subject that I was more comfortable with, but I would still utilize the same technology that I used. My students were engaged throughout the lesson. Most of them have an interest in science and technology so between the combination of topic and method of delivery, I had their attention throughout the lesson.
Overall, the students were engaged in the lesson from start to finish. They all actively participated in our interactive read aloud. They paid attention and were able to pull valuable information from the text and compose that information into cohesive sentences (even if you have to be able to read Kindergarten to read them). Everything from my formative and summative assessments tells me that the students created knowledge about the topic and therefore this was a successful lesson.
